Motorcycle Theory Test

We can help you to prepare for the theory and hazard perception test. We can provide you with the publications and training aids listed below for home study or we have theory training sessions in our computer equipped classroom. These sessions cost £15 per hour and can be scheduled to take place at a time to suit you, evenings and weekends included.

The Theory Test for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists was introduced in July 1996. It is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified riders and drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on today's busy roads.

You will be asked to answer 35 multiple choice questions, followed by a test of your hazard perception skills. You will need to pass both parts of the test at the same sitting to pass your theory test.

Areas of assessment include:

  • driver attitude
  • traffic signs and regulation
  • effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour
  • safety and environmental aspects of vehicles
  • hazard perception

The hazard perception element involves watching 14 video clips and identifying the developing hazard or hazards. Currently the pass mark is 44 out of 75. More details are available from www.dsa.gov.uk under the link Theory Tests.

To help study and prepare for your theory test the Driving Standards Agency publishes the book, the Official Theory Test for Motorcyclists containing the questions and answers. This is updated annually and the current book contains more than a thousand questions.

A CD-ROM containing all the questions in the question bank is also available.

The core material for the theory test questions are taken from the following DSA publications:

It is important that you study - not only to pass the test - but also to become a safe rider.

When you take the theory test, you'll be asked some specific questions regarding motorcycles, as well as questions that apply to all road users.

Weekday, evening and Saturday test sessions are available. The touch screen theory test has been specially designed to make the test more accessible to the general public. It is particularly helpful to people with special needs. All that you need to do is touch the screen to indicate which (answer's) you think are correct. For more details please visit www.dsa.gov.uk and browse their site.

In addition to the official publications a number of unofficial books and interactive learning materials are available from various bookshops.
